学院拥有国家工科物理基地、北京市弱磁检测及应用工程技术研究中心、磁光电复合材料与界面科学北京市重点实验室、北京市高校实验教学示范中心等国家级、省部级教学科研基地；拥有以环境气氛球差校正透射电镜、高性能计算机集群为代表的物质分析计算平台；承担了国家、省部级项目百余项，在包括Nature系列、Phys. Rev. Lett.、SIAM系列等刊物年发表SCI论文超过150篇，获得了包括国家自然科学奖二等奖、教育部自然科学奖一等奖在内的多项国家、省部级科研奖励。
Mathematical and Physical Science studies the deep structure as well as the law of motion of matter, which is the foundation of natural sciences, and is also the forerunner and base of the development of contemporary sciences.
Under this consensus, in the middle of the last century, the Foundation Courses Department with 25 professors was established at Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel Technology.The first director of the Mathematics Division was Professor Jingfang Liu, a dual Ph.D. in Mathematics and Astronomy obtained in France, who was the former director of Mathematics Department at Fu Jen University. The first director of the Physics Division was Professor Jinghui Gu, who was China’s first female doctor in physics, one of the organizers and the first vice chairman of Beijing Branch of Chinese Physical Society, and was also a mentor of the famous physicist Jianxiong Wu.
The two founders as well as other prominent scholars made the department the center of academic research and talents. Today, the School of Mathematics and Physics has 167 faculty and staff members, including elite scholars such as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Profs. Nanxian Chen and Houzhi Zheng, academician of Canadian Academy of Engineering Prof. Huanming Liu, National Outstanding Youth Fund winners, Outstanding Mid-Aged Experts in National Millions of Talents Project, National May 1st Labor Medalist, highly cited scientists of global ESI, first prize winners in National Competition for Young Teachers’ Basic Teaching Skills in Colleges and Universities, Beijing’s Famous Teachers, etc.
Our School has established many national and provincial teaching and research bases, such as the National Engineering Physics Base, Beijing Weak Magnetic Detection and Application Engineering Technology Research Center, Beijing Key Laboratory for Magneto-Photoelectrical Composite and Interface Science, University Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center in Beijing. The research platform includes equipment such as Ambient atmosphere spherical aberration corrected transmission electron microscopy and high-performance computer clusters for material analysis and calculation. Our School has undertaken more than one hundred projects at the national and provincial levels, published more than 150 scientific papers including journals such as the Nature series, Phys. Rev. Lett., and achieved numerous National and provincial awards including the second prize of National Natural Science Award, the first prize of Natural Science Award presented bytheMinistry of Education.
With its dedicated staff, our School offers over 200 courses for undergraduate and graduate students. Our teaching excellence is exemplified by three lecturers who were awarded first prize consecutively in National Competition for Young Teachers’ Basic Teaching Skills in Colleges and Universities, which heads the list of universities over the country. We strive to improve and innovate teaching methods by experimenting with three special projects: Science Experimental Class，“Kun Huang”Class, and“Sihe Min’s Mathematical Elite Program”.
In its 70 years’ history, our School has cultivated thousands of highly qualified personnel who now work in national institutes, enterprises and public institutions, higher education and research centers. Some of them have become backbones and leaders in national politics, economics, science and education sectors.
Under the guidance of the national “Double Tops” construction and the philosophy of our university, we will continue to improve the disciplinary system, work hard to run an application-oriented science major, and to develop multi-disciplinary studies as well as classic disciplines. We will continue to build a young and middle-aged academic backbone team with famous teachers, a reasonable structure, good business, and influence. Besides, we will persist in promoting the reform in education and teaching, and developing the integration between the scientific research and teaching so as to improve the quality of education. Our aim is to make our School a first-rate facility for teaching and learning, and a center of excellence for research and innovation. With the support of our outstanding staff, we will move closer and closer to this goal.
